Meet the minds behind innovate ITP
The chief executives of the six major metropolitan institutes of technology meet regularly to discuss topics, issues and strategies relating to innovate ITP, the tertiary education sector, government policies and the economy. A number of collaborative innovate ITP projects are under way in each of the organisations, with the chief executives maintaining an overall view on activities and progress.
Dr Rick Ede
Chief Executive of Unitec Institute of Technology Dr Rick Ede has been responsible for significant changes to the organisation, committing Unitec to its aspiration of being a world-class, world-scale Institute of Technology that is an agent of economic, social and environmental transformation.
He has a diverse background as an educator, researcher and strategic leader. In 2000, Rick joined Australia’s national research organisation, the CSIRO. After spending some time as Chief of CSIRO’s Forestry and Forest Products Division, he was appointed CSIRO’s general manager of client and partner relationships. He holds a Masters degree and a DPhil in organic chemistry from the University of Waikato, where he spent some time as a Senior Lecturer.
Dr Ede has consulted to industry and educational organisations in Asia and North America, co-authored a number of research papers, and is an alumnus of the London Business School and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Chris Gosling is Chief Executive of the Wellington Institute of Technology and Whitireia Community Polytechnic. He was previously Deputy Chief Executive (Operations) at Whitireia, a position he held for three years. He has worked in the Middle East setting up and operating a polytechnic in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Chris is the former Corporate Services Director at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT). This role followed several years in finance and senior management roles in local government in New Zealand.
He is a Chartered Accountant with membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Peter Brothers
Chief Executive for Manukau Institute of Technology since March 2007, Dr Peter Brothers is born and bred Aucklander. He joined MIT after nine years of leadership success as Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Auckland.
His earlier career included 20 years in the United States of America where he was involved in university research and teaching, as well as senior management roles with industry.
Peter holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University in addition to BE and ME degrees (Engineering Science) and a BSc (Mathematics and Physics) from The University of Auckland.
He currently has directorships with the Auckland Regional Transport Authority and Metrowater. His memberships include the NZ Institute of Directors and Auckland Rotary. He is a fellow of IPENZ (Institution of Professional Engineers of New Zealand).
Mark Flowers - Metro Group Chairperson
Chief executive of Wintec and Metro Group chairperson, Mark originally trained as a scientist, and then moved into professional social work early in his career, gaining experience in the health and welfare systems in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. He then worked in the health sector in Hawke’s Bay, holding a variety of senior management roles in both community health and hospital management before being appointed Chief Executive of Hawke’s Bay District Health Board in 1996.
Six years later Mark took on the role of Chief Executive of Wintec. Since 2002 the organisation has been transformed under his leadership into a financially sound institute with a reputation for quality and innovation.
Chief Executive of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology’s (CPIT) since 2010 Kay Giles has successfully steered the South Island’s largest vocational education provider through many challenges.
Kay has a passion for vocational education and training and the role it plays in contributing to economic, industry, community and individual development.
Prior to joining CPIT, Kay was Institute Director at SkillsTech Australia, the trades and technician institute in the Brisbane metropolitan area. While in Australia, she also held management and directorship positions at the Department of Employment and Training; the Open Learning Institute; the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE and Wide Bay/Sunshine Coast Region TAFE, Training and Employment Queensland (TAFETEQ).
Kay holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and a Master of Social Planning and Development from the University of Queensland.
Chief Executive of Otago Polytechnic since 2005, Phil Ker has developed a broad portfolio of expertise as an academic and an administrator in both university and polytechnic environments.
Previous roles have included lecturing in business (accounting, economics and management) and tertiary teacher education; and leading staff development and management of Student Services, Human Resources and Property functions. He holds a Master of Education from Massey University and a Management and Leadership in Education qualification from Harvard University.
Since joining Otago Polytechnic Phil has been motivated by the dual themes of innovation and sustainability – reflected in students’ learning environments, educational experiences and the Polytechnic’s operational practices.
He has particular interest in business education, education for sustainability, staff development generally and leadership development specifically; and in the recognition of prior experiential learning.
